Upgraded from 4G to a 5G smartphone and wondering how to set up your new device? In today’s post, we are sharing five things to do after buying a new smartphone. But before we begin, let’s cover some basics for setting up a new Android phone for first time users.

Login using a Google account

Android offers the advantage of having thousands of apps and games on your fingertips. To access these mobile applications, you need to login to the Play Store using a Google account. So, the first step is to create a Gmail ID. There are three ways to set up a Google account.

Set up a new Google account from scratch:

  • Start up your new smartphone
  • Select country and language
  • Select your keyboard options and accessibility settings
  • Click next, you will be prompted to login using a Gmail ID
  • Click Create account
  • Enter your name
  • In the “Username” field, enter a username
  • Enter and confirm your password
  • Click Next.
    • Optional: Add and verify a phone number for your account.
  • Finish setting up

Set up a new Google account using an existing email address:

  • Go to the Google Account Sign-In page
  • Click Create account
  • Enter your name
  • Click Use my current email address instead
  • Enter your current email address
  • Click Next
  • Verify your email address with the code sent to your existing email
  • Click Verify
  • Use the login information to Sign-In on your new phone

How to set up your new phone?

Now that you are signed-in, here are the top 5 things to do with your new smartphone:

Transfer contacts and media

If you are transferring contact and media from an old Android phone to your new phone, follow these steps.

  • Charge both devices
  • Connect to a Wi-Fi network
  • Sign-in using the same Google account on both phones
  • On the old device
    • Enable contact sync on the old phone.
    • Enable Google Photos sync on the old phone.
    • Enable Google Drive sync on the old phone.
    • Go to WhatsApp settings and backup latest chats and media.
    • Open Chrome and enable Bookmarks, Tabs, and Password sync.
  • On the new device
    • The sync will begin automatically for contacts, Chrome, Google Photos, and Google Drive.
    • For third-party apps like WhatsApp, login using your phone number to enable cloud backup sync from Google Drive.

Enable Privacy Protection

Enable Privacy Protection

To prevent unauthorized use of your smartphone, use lock screen security measures such as face unlock, pattern unlock, or PIN unlock. These settings can be found under System Settings > Privacy and Security. Secondly, set up a recovery process to avoid data loss, where you can sync apps and data across devices.

Download old and new apps

Google Play Store comes preinstalled with your new Android smartphone. Simply, open the Play Store app and start downloading your favorite apps and games. If you have migrated from an old Android smartphone, you can find your previous apps in the profile section. The phone will also prompt you to update pre-installed apps to their latest versions.

Set up your smartphone accessories

If you bought a pair of wireless earbuds with the new smartphone, go to System Settings > Bluetooth Settings to pair the devices. You can quickly access Bluetooth settings from the notification panel itself. To do that, simply drag your finger downwards from the top of the home screen or menu screen.

Set up notifications

Notifications are the best and sometimes the worst part of owning a smartphone. Notifications are sound alerts that let you know when you have received a message or social update. But notifications can quickly become annoying if you have too many apps sending dubious updates. So, visit System Settings > Applications to pick and choose apps that are allowed to send notifications.

Start your smartphone journey

Whether you are a new smartphone owner or a weathered Android enthusiast, a new smartphone always represents new experiences. Now that your phone is set up, it’s time to fire it up, chat with friends, update your social media, and play some fun online games with your buddies.
